Program Specifications

Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery / Program Intended Learning Outcomes

 

1.    Show understanding of the hospital environment and policies; health and safety, cross infection control, patient admission and clerking, theatre protocols, and basic surgical training
2.     Utilize knowledge in the anatomy of the head and neck, and its relevance to the clinical practice of head and neck surgery, medical emergencies, diseases originating from the head & neck area, and the different types of surgeries.
3.     Collect data to reach a diagnosis, based on integrating information form the history, clinical examination and radiography, then construct a problem list, a differential diagnosis list and a treatment plan.
4.     Assess and manage the following conditions:  infections originating from the oral cavity, OMF trauma, TMJ disorders, salivary gland pathology, and acute trauma.
5.     Apply and complete successfully the following procedures: prosthetic surgery, surgical extractions, including lower third molars and impacted canines, Osseo integration, dental implants and implant related surgeries.
6.     Utilize knowledge in the etiology, presentation, treatment planning and surgical techniques of oral malignancies, maxillofacial deformities and syndromes including cleft lip and palate.
7.     Apply critical literature review and present interesting cases in clinical pathological conferences, and conduct clinical audits and present them in scientific meetings
8.     Ability to conduct clinical research, write a paper and submit to a scientific journal or a national/regional conference
9.     Construct decisions in the cases of an emergency that emphasize patient safety as a priority. Therefore must understand and apply the role of an OMF surgeon in the A&E department; triaging cases, admission, referral and treatment.
10.   Show professional communication skills with peers, staff and patients.
11.   Show understanding of side effects and complications of treatments, and be able to present them in meetings and apply possible solutions to prevent recurrence
